Snowy Commute

Back to occasional videoblogs after the intensity of Vlomo.

It has snowed around where I live and where I work, although we have got off pretty lightly compared to other parts of the country. It’s all very pretty, but it adds a lot of time to my daily commute, both to and from work. Queues. Queues. Queues.

Vlomo 2010 Day 30 – Hindsight

I have really enjoyed Vlomo this year. It’s been tiring, but I have watched a lot of great videos from other vlomo-ers, shot and edited a wide range of stuff, and learned loads.

During this month I have upgraded from an old tape-based Sony DV camera to a shiny new High Def Sanyo Xacti, I have progressed from my old comfortable editing software (Serif Movie Plus) to get almost as comfortable with Adobe Premiere Pro. I have moved from hosting WMV videos on my own web site to uploading HD MP4 files to youtube, and changed the theme on my video blog. Without Vlomo I would have achieved none of this.

I hope Vlomo 2010 was good for you too!

Vlomo 2010 Day 29 – Leaving

Many of the videos I have produced for this year’s Vlomo have shown interesting places I can walk to in my lunch hour. As of 30 November 2010 the client projects which occupy most of my time will move as the client company vacates this building. It’s not far, less than a couple of miles, but it does mean that many of my favourite spots will probably be beyond a casual walk.

This place had a great atmosphere, and I’ll miss it. The end of the Academia era.

Vlomo 2010 Day 28 – Coffee

A half mile or so from the office where I mostly work at the moment a new coffee shop has opened up. A group of us went over to try it out last week. The coffee was good, the bacon sandwiches were excellent and the staff were keen. Here’s a snippet of conversation and the view of a nearby decorated underpass.

Vlomo 2010 Day 27 – Ice

A few weeks ago we folded down the netting and placed the winter cover on our garden trampoline. After some snow flurries, fog, and generally cold weather it had gathered some ice. Margaret and Elizabeth decided to clear the ice and make a piece of ice art in the garden

Vlomo 2010 Day 26 – Market

This weekend (26,27,28 November 2010), Bury St Edmunds has a special Christmas Market, with entertainment, food, and drink, as well as stalls selling all sorts of strange things. Apparently it really gets going in the evening, but I took the chance to see what was going on on one of my lunchtime walks.

It’s not much, and it didn’t settle, but we saw the first flurry of snow this winter in Bury St Edmunds this afternoon.

Vlomo 2010 Day 24 – Gardens

Just beyond the ducks from day 21 are the Abbey Gardens. Right in the centre of town and freely accessible to everyone, these gardens are filled with people relaxing and enjoying themselves during the summer. As the days get wetter and colder there are fewer people and more birds and squirrels.

Vlomo 2010 Day 23 – Pond

Another pleasant place to walk to in my lunch hour. This pond is really there to catch any rain run-off from the nearby A14. In the summer it is a nearly dry patch of mud, but as winter weather draws in it fills, providing a resting place for flocks of passing gulls and a few hopeful ducks.

On Saturday afternoon I dropped off my daughter to a music recital in Felixstowe, and took the opportunity to pop down to the beach and grab a few shots of the sea.
